Trail : home / Curriculum / Multicultural Education : School Councils Take on Race Equality
School Councils Take on Race EqualityIn March 2005 the Year 7 pupils at Queen Elizabeth School, Kirkby Lonsdale were involved in a number of Equal Opportunities workshops. They then collaborated with the whole School Council to develop policies and strategies from the students' perspective. They developed an action plan and in June 2005 a group began putting the first part of the policy in place. They began with 5 people from each year group and started the session with practical tasks to highlight how prejudice happens and what we mean by discrimination. The groups debated the definitions of some of the words uded and had a quick surf of the Britkids websites. The Britkids site was used to highlight some of the issues that were to be talked about. It deals with racism from the viewpoint of 9 fictional characters living in Britchester. It covers a lot of serious issues but in a way that puts them in context so it was a great way to get started. Once warmed up pupils were onto group work with each team producing something towards the Queen Elizabeth School booklet using the PowerPoint display. Group one looked at Social Responsibility.
