Recruitment is now taking place for Phase 7 of this very successful programme. In Cumbria we have over ninety teachers and nurses who have completed the
programme over the last few years, all of whom would testify to how effective their
involvement has been, impacting on their own practice, pupils and school in general.
With the OfSTED Well Being indicators in place for September 2009, changes to the
secondary curriculum being phased in since September 2008 and statutory PSHE
on the horizon, there has never been a better time to be involved.
The programme is designed for those actively engaged in the delivery of a planned
programme of PSHE, and is evidenced via a portfolio showing your personal
contribution to meeting the set national criteria.
There are two parts: Dimension A which looks at generic PSHE and Dimension B
where participants choose to focus on one of four themes – SRE, Drugs Education,
Emotional Health and Wellbeing and Economic Well Being and Financial Capability.
The aims are:
ü To improve competence and confidence
ü To raise the quality of teaching and learning
ü To develop effective partnerships
ü To aid policy development
ü To contribute to other government initiative, for example teenage Pregnancy and Drug strategies and Every Child Matters.
Upon completion, portfolios are accredited through Roehampton University with
CAT points being awarded that can be used towards further study.
The programme for this year begins in September 2009 with interim submission of
portfolios in January 2010 and final assessment in June. Participants are required to
attend some daytime meetings; cover for teachers is paid for from the central
funding for the programme.
There will be an introductory morning in June 2009 (see link below) to explain more
fully to those who think they may like to be involved. Details of this will be sent to all schools
soon after Easter via the portal and shown on the home page for Healthy Schools
on Cumbria Grid for Learning.
